charon fighting crime, ferrying dead

styx

If you haven’t noticed
I ain’t exactly living in a palace either
floating down the river of venom and death
doesn’t make me feel or smell great
so you can keep your mouth shut
It’s nothing i haven’t heard before
so yes, I’m cold to the wails of the wraiths
apathetic to the pleas of forgotten widows and orphans
so what? it’s not my fault their mortality ran dry unnoticed
or that their passage across the styx can’t be afforded

fair enough, I’m an asshole

I’m also a hypocrite
perpetuating constructs that used to torture me
that torment my brothers and sisters still
that starved me to the point of desperation
that I’d be sell my soul for a what if
Weak
Naive enough to trade my sanity for coins
oblons i don’t have the freedom or desire to spend
to allow Hades to tempt me with my own fantasies
of gold and glory he said
could finally be mine to keep
to believe that it would be worth it
to be bound to a boat
trapped between the rich bastards I have to serve
and the poor from which I came
Cruel
Informing souls that have just passed through hellfire
The berserk of greed and corruption upstairs
That the afterlife is no different
That one will find no justice
no solace in death
Confining them to a eternity of watching the rich sail through
afloat
while the poor are left to fester and mould
Their sobs just another whimper in the cacophony
That the ugly old man
They speak to
Is their executioner
Their judge and jury
Their prison guard

I apologise
truly
but it cannot be helped
my sympathy is worth nothing

For i am just a referee
In a game I’ve only ever lost
An undertaker
buried in the very graveyard
I’m supposed to own

Good death ma’am
I apologise
But please step aside
This ferry is about to depart.
